Germantown Residents for Economic Alternatives Together
Two things happened that launched us into a flooding and water resilience initiative. One was being invited to partner with GreenTreks for the documentary films in the Flood Ready Germantown series. The other was when the latex spill in the Delaware River happened in March 2023, and folks didn't know if the water was safe to drink. That brief disruption created a new awareness about the vulnerability of our water, and our lack of preparedness.
We have since hosted several gatherings and field trips to learn more, and we started a Water Working Group which meets regular (send an email if you'd like to join). We also created a Water Resilience Community Connectors pilot project, which was supported by the Philadelphia Office of Sustainability's Community Resilience and Environmental Justice grant throughout 2024. Each Community Connector identified a project and activities to do with their immediate neighbors:
Anita signed up several neighbors on her block to participate in the Rain Check program workshop to receive free rain barrels.
Allison worked with neighbors in her apartment building to identify steps and supplies to help them be better prepared for water disruptions, which occur several times a year.
Christina met with residents of a senior housing development on her block to invite them to share their stories about water and history of different ways they used to access it.
Have you heard about the new Water Shed community education space at the corner of Wayne Ave and Queen Lane?
We attended the open house on November 9th and our Community Connectors set up an information table:
Germantown has multiple water sources. Learn where your home's water comes from by entering in your address on this interactive map, so that if there's a disruption in the water supply, you'll know if your home is affected or not.
Folks from GREAT are featured in short films created by GreenTreks about flooding and emergency preparedness in Germantown. You can use these as an informational resource, and a start to an important community conversation: www.vimeo.com/channels/floodready
Use our discussion guide to bring the videos to a group of neighbors

(this is a work in progress as we continue learning! and it leans on work already done by other groups)
